FEELING SAFE

All animals have a basic need to feel safe and your dog is no exception. So how can you help give your dog that feeling of safety?

Firstly, get them a thorough vet check to ensure that they are as well and comfortable as they can be. Pain or illness will make them feel less safe.

Secondly, think about how you can give your dog opportunities to make choices. Feeling they have control over what happens to them is important. So encourage choice wherever you can and set the environment up to ensure the choices your dog makes also work for you.

Thirdly, make sure your dog always has time to process what they are seeing and hearing in the environment. Your dog will feel safer if they deal with events in their own time, with the distance and space that they need.

If you support your dog in these ways, you may see them returning to you or checking in when they’re unsure. You can become a source of safety for your dog.
